Evan Francis Rush, a loving father, proud grandfather, dedicated veteran, and tireless advocate for fellow veterans, passed away on June 9, 2026.

Born on August 9, 1965, in Dallas, Texas, and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, Evan graduated from Mountain Brook High School before answering the call to serve his country in the United States Navy. A lifelong learner, he later earned his bachelor's degree while building a life defined by duty, resilience, compassion, and an enduring commitment to his country, the veteran community, and those he loved.

Evan proudly served in the United States Navy for 20 years, entering active duty in August 1986 and retiring as a Chief Petty Officer in August 2006. During a career that spanned the Gulf War era and the early years of the Global War on Terrorism, he served as a Master-at-Arms and military police professional, completing deployments around the world and serving aboard the USS Nimitz (CVN-68), USS Boxer (LHD-4), and USS Milius (DDG-69). As a plank owner of the USS Boxer, Evan took great pride in helping commission the ship and forging lifelong friendships with his fellow sailors. His service was recognized through numerous military decorations and commendations, reflecting his professionalism, leadership, and dedication to duty.

Evan's commitment to service did not end when he removed his uniform. Following his retirement from the Navy, he devoted his life to supporting veterans and their families. He served as a Combat Stress Recovery Manager with Wounded Warrior Project, helping veterans navigate the challenges of mental health and recovery. In 2018, he joined the Nevada Department of Veterans Services, where he rose to become Deputy Director of Benefits and a respected leader and advocate for veterans across the state.

Colleagues knew Evan as a trusted mentor and dedicated public servant who cared deeply about the people he served. Throughout his career, he worked tirelessly to improve the lives of veterans and their families.

Beyond his service and professional accomplishments, Evan will be remembered for his quick wit, sense of humor, and ability to bring lightness to difficult moments. He rarely took himself too seriously and could often be found making others laugh, sharing a story, or finding just the right words when they were needed most.

Hawaii held a special place in Evan's heart. The aloha spirit stayed with him long after his years there, reflected in the shaka he so often flashed in photographs and shared with those around him. More than a gesture, it represented friendship, gratitude, compassion, and a reminder to approach life with a little more grace and a little less worry.

Evan was preceded in death by his parents, Eli Rush and Martha Mahoney Rush, and his sister, Martha Nan Rush.

He is survived by his daughters, Marissa Shoop, Hilary Aldabbagh, Madison Rush, Reagan Rush, and Courtney Rush; and by his cherished grandchildren, Amelia Aldabbagh, Avery Askew, and Kennedy Shoop.

He also leaves behind countless friends, shipmates, fellow veterans, and colleagues whose lives were touched by his friendship, mentorship, and commitment to service.

Though his watch has ended, the values he instilled-duty, resilience, compassion, and service to others-live on through those who knew and loved him.

Dad, your watch has ended. We will take it from here.

Military Funeral Honors will be held on June 30, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City, Nevada.
